Bacon, Sir Francis, Viscount St. Albans

Bacon, Sir Francis, Viscount St. Albans
(1561-1626)
Bacon is more remembered for his position as Lord Chancellor of England (1618-21) and for his non-fiction than for his poetry. His public life came to an end in 1621 when he was charged with taking bribes as judge and spent a few days in the Tower of London. Some of his publications are: The Proficience and Advancement of Learning, 1605. Novum Organum, 1620 (an English translation can be found at www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/bacon). History of Henry the Seventh, 1621. The New Atlantis, 1626 (describing a Utopian community). Sylva Sylvarum, 1627 (a miscellaneous collection of observations and experiments in natural history). Translation of Certain Psalms into English Verse, 1624. His Essays (1597-1625) are reckoned to be the most original of all his works. Some of his poems: "Guiltless Heart," "Sing a New Song" (appears to be inspired by Psalm 150), "Help Lord" (a plea that Truth and Right will prevail), "The Life of Man" (the world is but a bubble and the life of man is less than a hand span).
